Koreans artists entering the American music industry?

Hi guys!

I'm sure everyone has listened and seen Gangnam Style either on the radio or on youtube. I was surprised to hear it on the radio for the first time a few weeks ago and I found myself turning up the volume in my car haha. The song does have some good beats and those dance moves... WOW! who would have thought it would be so popular! Don't tell me none of you guys have tried to do those moves, to be honest with you, I'm trying to master it myself! it is still a work in progress haha.

Anyways, the reason why I mentioned "Gangnam Style" is due to the fact that Psy is a Korean artist and Korean music artist back in South Korea have been trying very hard and for numerous years to break into the american music industry. It actually started last year where some Korean bands such as "Big Bang" and their single "Blue" that got American artist Mick Jagger interested and some recognition towards the band itself and regards of the Korean music industry potentially entering into the American industry.

As for Psy, his music video has broken the Guinness World Records for having the most likes on youtube surpassing LMFAO - Park Rock Anthem! It only took him 2+ months where as LMFAO was at the number 1 spot, but it took them a little over 2 years. This makes me wonder if Psy is going to be a one hit wonder like William Hung or a test to see how Korean music will impact the market and in the future.

Let me know your opinion if you think Psy will be successful in the American Industry or will he be a one hit wonder?

  1. I also think it is really interesting that this is a number one hit right now. However I am also quite confused by it. How many people listening to this song really understand any of the lyrics except the occasional "sexy lady" but yet are completely willing to try to sing along with no idea what they are saying? It kind of reminds me of when I was 11 singing along to Ignition by R. Kelly, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6y_4_b6RS8) having no idea what I was saying until I grew up and understood the sexual undertones of this song. I wonder if Koreans are laughing at us thinking the same thing...
    Great Blog though!
