Bruce Willis was considering to sue Apple because of the terms and conditions stated on iTunes. Bruce has built a large music collection and wishes to leave his music library to his daughters Rumer, Scout and Tallulah. Bruce's wife, Emma Heming-Willis, posted a tweet on her twitter the next day saying that this story is not true.
Many people do not read the terms and conditions when installing iTunes (who wants to read pages of policies every time you update iTunes). Whether this rumor may be true or not, Forbes brings up a serious issue about digital media. Who actually owns the tracks that we purchase on iTunes. Do you think that Apple should change their terms and conditions so that we own the tracks since we've paid for it? Or do you agree that we are only borrowing the tracks when we make purchases from the iTunes store.
Hey jlai,
ReplyDeleteThis is all definitely news to me! I had no idea that when you buy songs on iTunes you are just borrowing them. I am one of those users that, like you said, never wants to actually read through the pages of terms and conditions but clearly I should start. I personally don't think that it is right to not be able to say I own the music I bought. The way I see it is that if I can't own it then why should I have to pay for it? And it brings up the question you stated as to who can actually say they own the tracks then? Can iTunes even say they own them? I think this should definitely be changed in there terms and conditions, but how do you feel about this issue?
Hey!
ReplyDeleteThis is news to me as well. I don't know if Bruce Willis can win something like this in court but I would be following the story to see what the end result is.
it's true, no one reads the terms and conditions but instead just scrolling down and clicking accept. I think iTunes isn't at fault here. They have the terms for a reason and if people do not choose to read them that is their own fault. I work with the BBB and CRTC in my own line of work and I always have to refer people back to those conditions.
I personally think Bruce Willis is just trying to make himself in the news and trying to sue such a large company like Apple. Apple will have lawyers that can simply bring him down quickly. If people really wanted to own the the music then go to your local HMV and buy the whole CD. Simple!
Thanks for the news. I am going to Google this story now and follow it.
